Friday Five- Favourite Meals

We missed y’all last week but we are back with another Friday Five.  In the spirit of Ramadhan, we MoneyKats have been allocating a bit more time during the day thinking about our favorite meals.  As we think about our top five dishes, not only do we gain appreciation for our food, but the people we share them with.  And with that, MoneyKat’s top five favorite meals.  As always, feel free to share your palate of delicacies (and where to get them).  Break bread y’all!

Omar:

5) Fish ball noodle soup- You should see how big the fish are that they get the balls off! Haha, jokes.  The best I’ve ever had was in Kuala Lumpur but amazingly Asian Tiger in the Canberra Centre does a pretty decent one.

4) Ipoh hor fun- Cantonese fried rice noodles served in egg gravy with seafood and chicken. From Ipoh, home of arguably the best food in Malaysia. Smoky, delicious goodness.

3) Lamb tajine- slow cooked Moroccan spiced stew served with cous cous. Can’t think of a heartier meal. Often tucked into one of these in the main square of Marakesh, Morocco, when travelling with my mate Simon, surrounded by hustlers, spice stalls and the music of snake charmers.

2) Pho- traditional Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I remember being with my mates Bruce and Rex in Hanoi eating pho from street corner stalls. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city supposedly have mad beef (pun intended) over who has the better version.

1) Curry laksa- Malaysian curry noodle soup usually with chicken, prawns, noodles, puffy tofu, sprouts. The king of all meals from the country with the best food in the world. Nuff said. Forget hip hop and poetry, I think my life is based around the quest for the perfect laksa.

Joe:

5) Naan and saag paneer-  Leavened, oven-baked flatbread and spinach+cheesey goodness.  Really though, the bread is most important thing.

4) Crab legs + butter + lemon- If I was Tom Hanks ‘castaway’ on an island with plenty of crabs and coconut water, I’d be on vacation.

3)  Shrimp wonton noodle soup-  (No Lil B) Oakland Chinatown is known for putting together this classic elixir proven to treat many ailments.

2)  Fried chicken- Because it’s cliche to have it be number 1.

1)  Korean banchan- Literally translated, it means side dish but because there are too many to name, you speak of it in general.  When you go to a Korean person’s house, they might feed you a meal consisting of rice and a few of these banchans.  Every household is different and they usually offer whatever they have available.  Luckily, for me, they are generally made by marinating veggies or meat in garlic and chile.
